Gastritis is an inflammation of the stomach lining primarily caused by H. pylori bacteria. It is a stomach condition in which the stomach lining which is called the mucosa is inflamed or swollen. The stomach lining contains glands that produce stomach acid and an enzyme called pepsin. Gastritis may occur as a short episode or maybe a long duration. It is a very common illness. It is usually mild and resolves without any treatment. Gastritis can cause pain in the upper part of your tummy (abdomen) and may lead to stomach ulcer. If not treated properly, it can last a long time and may lead to anaemia or stomach ulcer. Gastritis can be brief and sudden (acute gastritis), a long-lasting condition (chronic gastritis), or a special condition perhaps as part of another medical illness. Acute gastritis occurs suddenly, and will frequently respond to appropriate therapy while chronic gastritis develops slowly.
Causes of gastritis
Gastritis is caused by
- Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection: it is a type of bacterium that causes infection. Once you are infected, unless treated, the infection usually stays for the rest of one’s life. In some people, this bacterium causes an inflammation of the lining of the stomach or duodenum. While in many people, it causes no problem as a number of these bacteria just live harmlessly in the lining of the stomach and duodenum. This infection often begins in childhood and many people who are infected never have any symptoms.
- Damage to the stomach lining, which leads to reactive gastritis: people who have damage to the stomach lining can develop reactive gastritis. Reactive gastritis occurs as a result of
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen
- Using cocaine
- Drinking alcohol
- A reaction to stress caused by critical illness, severe burns, major surgery and traumatic injuries.
- Exposure to radiation
- Reflux of bile from the small intestine into the stomach
- An autoimmune response: the immune system attacks healthy cells in the stomach lining. The immune system normally protects people from infection by identifying and destroying bacteria, viruses, and other harmful foreign substances
Other causes include infections such as tuberculosis, syphilis, viral infection, fungal (yeast) infection parasites and worms.

- Pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal bloating
- Loss of appetite
- Feeling of fullness
Food Diet For Gastritis Patients
- Water at least 7-8 glasses a day
- Vegetable juice- mix 200mm of spinach juice with 100ml of carrot juice
- Potato- extract juice from raw potato and drink half a cup thrice daily fifteen minutes before meal
- Coconut water
- Ginger- chew a small piece sometime before meals. Take about 120gm of ginger root four times every day for about 8 weeks.
- Fruits- apple, berries, pears, banana
- Skinless poultry, and fish such as salmon or sardines
- Grains- oatmeal, whole wheat bread, brown rice, pasta
- Olive oil and avocado

Foods to avoid
- Hot cocoa and cola
- Chocolate milk
- Caffeinated drinks such as coffee, green or black tea, chocolate
- Tomato and tomato products such as tomato paste, sauce , or juice
- Citrus fruits, juices, e.g. orange, lemon, lime, grapes
- Milk and other dairy products
While this food diet for gastritis patients helps to eliminate gastritis, it does not stop the need for you to see your doctor.
