This is a disease that affects the tongue. This is a condition marked by swollen tongue and change in colour of the tongue. It can happen due to many reasons like ulcer, allergic reactions and eating hot foods, etc. During Glossitis, there will be chronic inflammation of the papillae, creating discomfort in eating. It is a health problem that leads to inflammation and tenderness of the tongue. Glossitis can be in different form. They include:
- Hunter Glossitis
This happens due to a deficiency of folic acid or vitamin B12 in the body. It is also known as a bald tongue, smooth tongue, or Atrophic Glossitis. This cause a change in taste sensation as well as pain, tenderness, and burning sensation on the tongue.
- Median Glossitis
This condition is characterized by rhomboid elevations over the front, medium or posterior region of the tongue. It is also known as Median Rhomboid Glossitis. Its treatment involves the use of antifungal agents.
- Migratory Glossitis
It is popularly known as a Geographic tongue or Benign Migratory Glossitis. It is a harmless condition affecting the surface of the tongue. With Geographic tongue, patches on the surface of the tongue are missing papillae and appear as smooth, red “island”, often with slightly raised greyish white borders. These patches (lesions) give the tongue a map-like or geographic appearance. The lesions often heal in one area and then migrate to a different part of the tongue. This tongue ailment often arises due to a yeast infection. Contact of the tongue with certain kinds of food can also lead to this condition.
Causes of Glossitis
There are a number of factors that lead to this condition. They include:
- Diseases: certain diseases that affect your immune system may also attack the tongue’s muscle and papillae. Diseases such as Herpes Simplex – a virus that causes cold sores and blisters around the mouth, may contribute to swelling and pain in the tongue.
- Allergic reactions: allergic reactions to foods, medications, and other potential irritants may aggravate the papillae and muscle tissue of the tongue. Potential irritants such as the use of mouthwash, toothpaste, plastic dentures, retainers breathe fresheners, and some blood pressure medicines can produce allergic reactions in the tongue.
- Mouth trauma: this is due to injuries in the mouth which can affect the condition of the tongue. Inflammation may occur as a result of cuts and burns on the tongue or of dental appliances placed on the teeth.
- Dry mouth: this is caused by a lack of saliva, which may be due to a salivary gland disorder or overall dehydration. So, saliva is needed to keep the tongue moist.
- Iron deficiency: iron deficiency in the bloodstream can also lead to this disorder.
- Vitamin deficiency: this disease may also arise if a person suffers from the deficiency of some vitamins like B or B12 in the bloodstream.
- Yeast infection: infection in the mouth caused by yeast attack can also lead to this disorder.
Symptoms of Glossitis
Symptoms of Glossitis may rise rapidly or gradually over a period of time. They include:
- Inflamed tongue
- Soreness in tongue
- Having difficulties in swallowing, chewing, or speaking
- Tenderness in tongue
- Pale colour of tongue
- Colour changes of the tongue
- Fiery red tongue
- Smoothness on the surface of the tongue

- Drink plenty of water
- Fruit juices like apple, cranberry, or grape
- Low-fat milk products
- Eat water-based fruits and vegetables like watermelon and cucumber
- Drink 1 to 2 glasses of coconut water daily

Foods to Avoid
- Avoid eating hot, spicy, acidic, or salty foods
- Avoid tobacco products
- Avoid acidic fruits and vegetables
- Avoid heavily flavoured candy or other food products
- Limit your consumption of highly sugary and processed foods
- Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages
- Maintain oral hygiene by brushing your teeth thoroughly at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
- Use a glycerin mouthwash 2 or 3 times a day
- Use aloe vera juice to rinse your mouth 2 or 3 times daily
- Stir 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and a little raw honey in a glass of water. Sip this solution slowly 1 or 2 times a day.
- Mix 1 tablespoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar and ¼ teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water. Use it as a mouthwash 2 or 3 times a day
Follow both these remedies until symptoms subside.
